Maybe it all comes down to giving people the tools to create fun content and memorable moments. And if a character can become the vehicle for that, even better.
Strangely, it also made me think of Rage Bait, a very strong exhibition I saw in Venice, part of the unofficial Biennale. It featured Italian brainrot characters oversharing their childhood trauma to a therapist. Completely unrelated, perhaps. Except that it also showed how ubiquitous they are now.
Characters like Tung Tung Sahur and Ballerina Cappuccina were reenacting real conversations from suicide-prevention hotlines. Somehow, seeing the most ridiculous characters on the internet carry something that human made them feel strangely valuable again.
I think indeed it's exactly that, they are so 'random' and ridiculous that they become relatable, a bit like the best performing content on social can be weird, ugly and unexpected vs beautiful and polished content.
